CEREC® is a multi-instrument system that allows dentists to create and implant custom-fitted ceramic restorations in a single appointment. The system consists of an infrared digital camera, a computer with 3D imaging software, and a milling unit with diamond blades for quick, precise, and highly detailed construction of restorations. Dr. Connaughton and Dr. Bator use CEREC CAD/CAM in Boise, Idaho, for your ease and convenience when you visit Tree City Family Dental.

The CEREC system can produce any permanent, single-tooth ceramic restoration, including crowns, onlays, veneers, and fillings. Restorations are fully designed and fabricated by the dentist, allowing for complete control over the look and fit of the material as opposed to creation in a lab by someone who has never even seen the actual patient.

Unlike metals and alloys, the ceramic used in CEREC restorations is similar to the natural tooth, so cracking is minimized because the material expands and contracts at about the same rate as the tooth during temperature changes while eating. In addition, CEREC offers benefits over traditional restoration systems such as fewer injections, less drilling, less material removed from the damaged tooth, and minimal time commitment. It also eliminates the need for temporary restorations, which can fall off or lead to other problems.

The entire CEREC procedure is done in only one short visit. Our dentist will first administer a local anesthetic and prepare your tooth for the restoration, removing decayed and weakened tissue from the affected area. At this point, instead of using dental putty to take an impression of your tooth, he will take a digital picture with the CEREC camera. Using CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, the CEREC software converts this picture to a 3D virtual model of your prepared tooth. This image is used as a guide to design your new restoration. Once our dentist is happy with the virtual tooth, the data is sent to an onsite CEREC milling unit, which creates your new tooth from a high-quality ceramic block. These blocks come in a wide variety of shades and colors to match your surrounding teeth. The process usually takes less than 20 minutes.

Patients may experience some increased sensitivity the day of the procedure. In this case, you may be more comfortable staying away from hot or cold food or drinks. The sensation should soon return to normal. CEREC restorations do not require any kind of special care, but should be brushed normally like regular teeth and cleaned by a professional at routine visits. Proper hygiene will help increase the health and longevity of the restored tooth. Many patients enjoy successful long-term results from CEREC restorations.
